Description
Eight Songs for Soprano and Piano Op. 50
Poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay
Commissioned by soprano Anna Singer, 8 Songs for Soprano and Piano was completed in February, 2017. Anna Singer and pianist Tina Faigen gave the world premiere performance in Pittsburgh on April 20, 2019.
The poems were selected from some of Millay’s earliest published collections. Four of the eight reflect the poet’s love and fascination with nature, while the other four deal with darker subjects, often with abrupt changes and surprising transformations. The set includes:
- Eel-grass
- The Dream
- City Trees
- The Death Of Autumn
- Wraith
- Assault
- Departure
- Afternoon On A Hill
Schultz’s writing for the voice and piano captures the full range of emotion that Millay expresses in these poems – from beauty to barren, joy to despair, strength to fear – all highly dramatic with the broad color pallet that Millay brings to her writing and Schultz to his music.
Soprano range e’ – g”. Performance duration: 25 minutes. See the first page of each song in the gallery images to the left.
