Description
Completed in 2019, Monument for Orchestra Op. 53 is Robert Schultz’s tribute to the Tree of Life victims. The work was commissioned by Pittsburgh’s Edgewood Symphony Orchestra which gave the premiere on October 19, 2019.
The eight-minute piece begins quietly with violins and ultimately grows to a peak using the full resources of the orchestra to achieve a monument that evokes strength and resilience. A primary feature of the music is the weaving and combining of expressive melodic lines to create the texture, a slightly dissonant yet hauntingly beautiful harmonic tapestry. References to two Jewish songs are woven into the second half of the work, leading to the dramatic and powerful closing section.
