Composed in 1979, Nine Preludes, Op. 10 was first published in 1980 by Columbia Pictures Publications as Volume 1 of Schultz’s Future Artist Series (F1468P9X), the first edition of Robert Schultz’s original piano music to appear in print. The original edition was highly acclaimed and remained in print for nearly 20 years. This edition offers beautiful new music engravings with revised and updated editing by the composer. The gallery images to the left offer a view of the first page of each prelude.
The preludes were conceived with the dual purpose of serving as an introduction to odd and mixed meters as well as being a set of short, attractive recital pieces. While these preludes are accessible to intermediate pianists, their colorful and sophisticated qualities have captured the interest of advanced pianists and concert artists.
Reviewing for Clavier Magazine in the April 1981 edition, George Anson wrote:
The only titles which these lovely preludes carry are those of mood, such as “very gently” and “delicately,” and for the most part they require soft and unforced tone quality. Throughout, the music is colored with beautiful dissonant touches, frequent meter changes, and a spirit of impressionism. The indicated pedal changes give even more atmosphere. For sensitive players.
Nine Preludes Op. 10 is also available in a standard sheet music edition (print): SMP551
