Description
Terraces for Flute and String Orchestra Opus 64
Originally written for flute and piano in 2022, Terraces is dedicated to Robert’s brother, flutist Edward Schultz. This version, scored for flute and string orchestra in 2023, was premiered in Pittsburgh by flutist Peggy Greb and the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra on March 15, 2025.
The piece begins with an introduction in the strings that leads directly to the material for which the piece is named. The expressive flute writing here is supported by an undulating pattern of two alternating minor chords, ascending and descending, that evolves into a more complex dialogue of animated rhythmic figures within a framework of mixed meters. This primary section is restated in part, then returns intact near the end of the work. Midway an expressive melodic solo in the first violins is reprised by the flute, following which the piece progresses through several sections that further develop the theme of Terraces. The work builds to a climax then softens for the gentle flute melody that ushers in the return of the opening section and the conclusion of Terraces.
The colorful and highly expressive writing for both the flute and strings makes Terraces an attractive, audience-friendly addition to any concert program. Duration 6:30.
