Description

Terraces for Flute and Piano Opus 61

Written during the spring of 2022, Terraces is dedicated to Robert’s brother, flutist Edward Schultz who premiered the work with pianist Jeffrey Uhlig in Philadelphia in September, 2023.

The piece begins with a piano introduction that leads directly to the material for which the piece is named. The expressive flute writing here is supported by an ascending pattern in the piano built of broken Gm9 and E-flat m+7 chords. This primary section is restated in part, then returns intact near the end of the work. Midway an expressive melodic solo for the pianist is reprised by the flute, following which the piece progresses through several sections that further develop the theme of Terraces.

The colorful and highly expressive writing for both the flute and piano make Terraces an attractive, audience-friendly addition to any recital program. Duration 6:30.
